What is your plan of attack for the holiday season?

Thanksgiving (eventhough the Canadian one has already passed), Christmas, New Years and other holidays are looming around the corner. T’is the season where weight is gained. Do you guys have a ‘diet’ plan for these oh so tempting times?

I myself have been slipping a little bit lately due to bdays and accompanied stress and work. Haven’t been running every other day like I was - although I made a good start this week (ran Sunday and this morning) but the food just seems to keep finding it’s way to my mouth.. and somehow the water isn’t. So I figure, since all these holidays, my own birthday (nov 23), Alex’s birthday (Jan. 10) and to top it all off Bruce’s birthday (Feb 27) are all just about to hit, I need a plan to stay strong. I want to keep on running and find (yeah I am still looking) another type of exercise to do. The food is going to be a challenge and I also don’t want to sit there and eat carrots while the rest is gorging on pies and turkeys and stuffing (oh stuffing yess). The main challenge for me will be the drinking. There will be parties and what is a party without a bottle of wine … lol.

But I want to be somewhat prepared and have some sort of plan so I was wondering if anyone out here in buddyslim land has given this some thought for themselves. We can’t let our hard work and progress of the past years/months/weeks just go to waste (or waist I guess hehe) during this time right?

Yes… the specialest day of the year I think so personally LOL!

I thought it was far away too but this is where the prep starts and all of a sudden you wake up and Santa is stuck in the chimney! I remember this from previous years so this year we have to be prepared! (dunno how though lol)

I will try to do what I do every year…have a little smidge of everything. Then take long walks during the day.

Gosh, I feel like we are on the SAME wave length! I have been eating eating eating too lately. This past week and a half or longer. Not bad foods, just always hungry. I let myself eat when hungry so my calories have been arounf 1800-2200 each day. Now last week I joined a gym and have been going religiously but since sick, I decided not to go today. I need to plan ahead for the Holidays too—I NEED to get on track now so I can be prepared :) We will get through it!!! We have to, right ?!?!?!?!??!?!

The last few weeks I have started giving myself a “Day off”. I have cut my cals a little on the other 6 days so I can eat what I want, how I want on the day off, I don’t exercise either. It is NOT a pig out day but I can feed my wants. So for Thanksgiving that will be my day off the same for Christmas. And the Christmas party that I am going to on 12/12. In between if a special treat is given to me or I make a treat I really want I will save it for my day off.
Since I have started this I am losing weight again and my mental health has improved!!! I do anything for 6 days. I have actually exercise more since I have started this and I always know that I only have a “few days” until I can treat myself with what ever I wanted to have. Most of those “cravings” actually disappear. I am learning to enjoy the delayed gratification, lol

I am not eating at home so I won’t have the temptation of leftovers, yeah!

Well for thanksgiving Billy and I are not going back to Oklahoma. So I’ll get to make my very first Thanksgiving dinner, and I’m really excited! I’ll know how my food is prepared, and I can have the right amount of portions! And we’ll have the gym to exercise in.

Christmas is going to be harder! We are leaving for Oklahoma on the 10th of December, and not getting back until basically the 3rd of January. December is going to be the month from HELL!!! 3 weeks and 3 days away from home! 3 weeks and 3 days I’m going to be eating food I don’t know how it was prepared, proper portions, calories, and no gym!!! It’s going to be hard!

So my plan of action…. (I need to write this down and take it with me so I can remind myself while we are gone! lol…) I’m going to eat as healthy as I possibly can. Eat what I think is a good portion, and hopefully drag out some measuring cups if we are eating at somebody’s house. lol.. (wont that make me look like a crazy woman!) I know what foods are good for me, and what foods are bad. So I’ll try to resist the bad foods. Try to drink my normal 100oz of water. I think I’m going to bring my huge 73oz water bottle I use everyday with me so I’ll know better how much water I am actually taken in instead of just guessing. RESIST THE SODAS!!!! Billy’s family are REALLY bad about stocking their frige full of sodas! So I am going to resist, I’m going to resist, I’m going to resist!!!! (you think if I say it enough it will actually happen?) lol.. And as far as exercise… this is going to be a hard one! It’s going to be cold outside and, no gym to go to. So I’m going to invest in a set of 10 pound free weights. I’m going to bring them with us, and I’m going to try and work time in to use them! Doing squat lifts, squat kicks, lunges, pushups, ANYTHING I can think of!!! and hopefully if it’s not too cold do some running outside….

Well that’s my plan of action!!! :)

What I learned in weight watchers is to plan, plan, plan. Bring your measuring cups, scale, walking shoes, or whatever you need to make yourself successful. Bring your “tools” with you.

If you overindulge, remember it is only 1 day. As I wrote in my first blog entitled “on my way”, just because you broke a dish in a set, does not mean that you throw away the whole set. You sweep the pieces of the broken dish away and put in the “garbage can”, and continue to use the rest of the set. We all have those “broken dish” days.

Take these moments as learning opportunities and apply towards your next challenge. So the next “party”, instead of having a dessert & drinks, maybe just half your dessert, and cut back one or two drinks, or even eliminate the dessert altogether, and have your “usual” adult beverage.

For me, instead of an adult beverage, I walk around with a cup of diet coke (looks like a rum & coke, but no additional calories & no one knows but you), or if in a wine glass, crack open a can of diet gingerale (looks like champange or sparkling wine). Again, who the hell knows the difference. I stay sober, and I fit in with all the other socialites!

Oh, one more thing. Create a new tradition which increases your activity level. For example, if you are have the holiday meal at your house, have a game night of something like charades, or twister, or some other “active game”. Your company will enjoy it, and will be more fun for you because you will not have stuffed yourself silly, and can be more flexible than the other drunk bozos. “Tradition is a guideline, not our jailors.”

If you are going somewhere for the holidays, if you are staying at a hotel, look for one with a gym, or a pool at it (most big chains do). GO TO TOWN. Your paying the rate, USE EVERYTHING!!!!
